What is Intensive In Home Psychotherapy?

The In Home Psychotherapy Program provides intensive mental health treatment, support and education to children who have a mental health diagnosis and whose emotional/behavioral problems are more severe or comprehensive than can ordinarily be managed in an outpatient setting. The children/adolescents must be having difficulty in at least two settings: school, home, community, legal.

Services are provided by a team consisting of a state certified Senior Psychotherapist with a Masters in Counseling, Clinical Social Work, or Marriage and Family Therapy and a Second Team Member with extensive experience working with children and adolescents with mental health and behavioral concerns.

A variety of therapeutic practices consistent with best practices provided by the Senior Therapist are used in this program, including but not limited to:  behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, play therapy, family systems therapy and solution focused psychotherapy.

The In Home Psychotherapy Program is offered as a Medicaid card service and requires a prior authorization process to be completed for Medicaid approval before services may begin.  Cases are offered on a case by case approach rather than by counties, but currently teams are providing services to children/adolescents and their families in Brown, Shawano, Marinette, Winnebago, Outagamie, Manitowoc, Waupaca, Door County, Oneida and Vilas Counties. Other counties may be added in the future.

How does the In Home Psychotherapy Program work?

This Program:

  • Works with the family and child in the home where the immediacy of the concerns can be addressed.
  • Works with the child or adolescent and the entire family toward improving functioning in the home, school, and community.
  • Provides parenting support, consultation with school staff, and coordination of care with other treatment providers involved in the child’s and the family’s lives.
  • Has a positive impact on the child, adolescent and their families.
  • Provides assessment of the family's and child’s needs and strengths, individual and family therapy sessions, collateral contacts with school and community service providers, and psychiatric consultation as needed.
  • Provides 6-8 hours of services a week with a family.
  • Provides services in the home including family sessions, individual sessions, parenting sessions, skill development, and parenting education. Services are based on the unique needs of the child and family.
  • Reduces the number of out of home placements.
